Restoring a Heywood-Wakefield M276 Corner Cabinet

I purchased this harder-to-find cabinet from a friend along with the two Streamline armchairs shown in the photo. Produced roughly between 1950 and 1955, the M276 belongs to the Heywood-Wakefield “Modern” period. Corner cabinets were practical pieces. They allowed homeowners to display pottery, glassware, books, or decorative objects without sacrificing wall space, and they worked especially well in dining rooms, living rooms, and breakfast areas.

Restoring one is a little different from restoring a table, chair, or bedroom case piece. A corner cabinet has multiple angles, interior shelves, narrow edges, and often a combination of exposed and less visible surfaces. It also tends to collect wear in very specific places: the front edges, the base, the shelf lips, and the lower cabinet door or doors. Because these pieces were meant for display and storage, the interiors may be surprisingly worn, with scratches from ceramics, glassware, or serving pieces moved in and out over decades.

The original Heywood-Wakefield finishes were not simply “blond wood.” They were carefully lacquered finishes designed to give the birch wood a warm, modern, uniform appearance. The goal is to bring back the character of the original surface while respecting the age of the piece. The finished used in the restoration is Cardinal Furniture Company’s reproduction champagne stain.

The interiors deserve special attention. On a display cabinet, the inside is not secondary. Since it frames whatever is placed inside, and uneven color or rough restoration work will be noticeable. Clean, repair, and finish shelves with the same care as the exterior. If the shelves are removable, they are easier to work on separately. If not, the corners and underside edges require slow, detailed work.

Once restored, the M276 is especially good for displaying mid-century pottery, glass, or dinnerware. Its angled form creates a natural stage without taking up much floor space. The best restoration does not make it look brand new. It brings back the warmth, clarity, and usefulness of a well-made seventy-year-old piece while preserving the character that makes Heywood-Wakefield furniture so appealing.
