Sears Wallpaper and Wall Oilcloth, 1955

Sears Wallpaper 1955 Panel

Sears’ 1955 wallpaper catalog offered a broad mix of floral, scenic, geometric, and novelty designs for nearly every room in the house. Many patterns were sold under the Harmony House name, allowing customers to coordinate wallpaper with other Sears furnishings and color schemes.

Convenience was a major selling point. The catalog promoted pre-pasted, pre-trimmed wallpaper that could be hung without professional help, along with washable wall oilcloth for kitchens, bathrooms, and other hard-working spaces. Designs ranged from traditional florals and textured stripes to tropical foliage, kitchen motifs, and whimsical scenes.

The catalog captures the wide variety available to mid-century homeowners, when wallpaper was used not simply as an accent, but as a defining part of a room’s overall design.
