The Curious Charm of Sascha Brastoff’s Resin Animals

Sascha Brastoff is best known for his exuberant ceramics, but his resin animal figures show another side of his mid-century California sensibility: playful, sculptural, and highly decorative. Produced in a range of animal forms, these molded resin pieces included birds, cats, bears, hippos, rhinos, penguins, pelicans, owls, and other stylized creatures, often finished in vivid color and signed or marked on the underside.

They are not realistic animal studies so much as character pieces: compact, expressive objects meant to animate a room. Their bright colors, glossy surfaces, and simplified forms fit comfortably within the more theatrical side of mid-century design, where accessories could carry as much personality as furniture or tableware. For collectors, Brastoff’s resin animals are appealing because they sit just outside the better-known pottery lines. Examples appear regularly, but desirable forms, strong colors, and good condition can push prices higher.
